Region 5N wrap.

2016 R5N is now history. Haven't been to Perry in the last 7 years and was again amazed at all the improvements the Tyler family have made to the airport. Our contest this year was again blessed with challenging weather which tested all the entrants skills and the CD preformed with a gold star. He even has a cow bell for cancelling a task.

The second day proved a test going into and out of the first turn. Out west we fly higher and just don't get to see as many terrain features. I did mention this fact at the next days pilot meeting about even seeing cows wag their tails which everyone seemed to enjoy. But what's important is the real days winner, Rich Owen, as he did a masterful job of slamming everyone by over 6 mph, in 18 Meter.  F8, Bill Gawthrop was running with Rich but ran into troubles in the third turn.
KM, Ken Sorenson, the winner in 18 Meter, did again another skillful job of  of managing his second contest win in a row this season. DB, Dick Butler,  won the Open class. I  got to watch his landing on the first contest day as I barely managed to find and land on the extreme end of the runway. Mamad Takallu, MD, won Sports class, along with Jim Lee, 1X, with the FAI class.
Great food, challenging weather which tested everyone's skill, no busted gliders along with excellent sportmanship displayed was again what this R5N contest strives to put on for all. Many years ago, Mr. Tyler said quietly to me all he wanted was everyone to have a good time. Well, Mr. Tyler, I do believe everyone had a great time and again thanks to all, the tow pilots, operations  managed by Larry Travers, and everyone else.
Also, one last note, Brain Glick, who I haven't seen in a number of years, hasn't changed at all. He flew down from Mifflin in his C-180 to help out with  tows. He also helped auction off a mason jar of ...errr... liquid gold (moonshine). Got 60 bucks for it, and the guy who bought it....doesn't drink. Only in Perry.

Best. #711.

Smilin faces.........Clicks the pics makes them big!!

Sarah (SK) and Jason (JA) Arnold flew in yesterday with 2 planes, flew home in one. In a few days they will again be headed from Chilhowee to Perry with trailers in tow.

Several friends of the Tyler family have headed off to the kennel. They saw my camera and started styling.....

I need to make some......amends..... as when I posted yesterday of Bill's, F8's panel, the small sign above his "Black box" was my failed attempt in pointing it out. Years back, someone else had a small sign..."Hope is not strategy".....ETA bitter if memory serves me well.

Oh, the above picture is my panel..........I really need a auto pilot, cup of coffee and USA today.

Rain last night, cool temps helpin chill a Bud surprise which  has arrived!!!!

Few more days, its going to change..........oh where ya beeeee??? We still got a slot or 2 open.

Thee "grid" & fence, F8 cockpit pic.....& stuff Perry 2016.

When asked what place contest finish and this shy group responded according.
LX and KM.......LX has his trigger finger ready...............I did ask if the fence was to keep us in...or "them out". Seems the horse ranchers have a 4 board fence.....has some meaning to them.... sounds more like "he haw" to me.
US Team member F8 doing some new instrument work and a close up of his panel. The dew is going to fly on the next pic.......oh me....oh my, see what your missing by not being here.

Cows didn't respond to my "cow ding calls". Enough said on that, seriously.  Its windy & cool now this Thursdays, 4-14-16. Mexican was good last night.  Seeing friends I haven't seen in a few years, Best to say its best to still be "on the planet and getting ready to race"!

About them "toothpicks"........

New tent went up this morning. Big, bright and easily see from the air!!!!

Now, me thinks I been "storied" about these Carolina "toothpicks" as they really are tent stakes. "Chicken on a Beer" is planned for the first day contest dinner. Folks are showing up....LX, F8, N1K, 5U, K2 and KM to name some. More are here but we are going to dinner..."Mexican" is the plan. More tomorrow. simply won't believe all the knowledge I am getting here.

Oh, went for a ride in the Fire truck all around the airport today. Cows were looking, ducks went flying, double clutching was being demonstrated. Simply awesome!!!!

Some R5N Perry history notes

When I retired 13 years ago, I came to R5N and of course missed the sign for the turn off. Got turned around and then saw the "sign".  First picture is where the Tyler family and I shared dinner. Today, the changes made and the Tyler family's compassion for the sport we enjoy are inspiring.

Now about that "flag pole'. Seems it was down in Wagener at the EMS station. It had been idle for some time and Mr. Tyler asked the mayor about their plans for that "pole". They had none and in short order it was moved to its now "new and permanent  location"(happened a few years back). New watering stations, electrical outlets and much more has been done. A new tent arrived via FedX just a few hours ago. Years past we have experienced soaring conditions which would leave west Texas in awe. This contest is starting to look "good". Trust me, I been the weather guy at numerous contests. Oh ya....... you need to come. Ya here!

Spring time in the Carolina's  can't get much better than the show the Tyler family and friends put on.

In the above picture. Toothpicks second to none......................

Still a few spots open. Call Rhonda....SSA website has the information.

 Club house.
Yep, news flash 101, holds 600 or so gallons, runs, has modern electronics which will help when the CD doesn't show up at the pilots meetings...........oh ya!

We were flying today, but the group went fishing and I was left typing. Tuesday rain, so maybe some pre practice starting Wednesday.
